Why Do Two "3000K" Bulbs Look Different? Mixing Bulbs in One Fixture

The short answer

Because "3000K" is a range, not a point. A bulb sold as 3000K can measure anywhere from roughly 2850K to 3150K, and cheap bulbs are made without tight colour binning — so one reads yellow, one reads green, one reads pink.

Buy every bulb for one fixture in the same brand, model and batch, plus one or two spares stored with them.

One socket in a six-arm chandelier fails, you buy a replacement with the same number on the box, and the whole fixture now looks wrong. Nothing was mislabelled. The number was never that precise.

The number on the box is a target, not a measurement

Correlated colour temperature carries a tolerance. A run nominally at 3000K may land anywhere in a band commonly described as about 2850K to 3150K. Two bulbs at opposite ends of it are 300K apart — obvious when they hang a foot from each other.

Binning, and what MacAdam steps mean

LEDs come off a wafer with natural variation, so makers sort finished emitters into colour bins. How tight those bins are is measured in MacAdam steps — rings outward from a target point, each roughly the smallest difference an eye can detect.

If a specification does not mention binning at all, that is itself the answer. Consistency costs money to control, and makers who pay for it say so.

Colour temperature is not the only variable

Two bulbs can measure the same CCT and still look different, because the number places light only along the warm-to-cool line. It says nothing about how far off that line the light falls — the green-versus-pink axis people describe as a bulb looking dirty or sickly.

Phosphor formulation, emitter selection, optics and driver all shift the result. So do the parts of colour rendering that CRI averages away, particularly R9, the deep red value. Poor R9 makes skin and wood look flat, and that gets reported as the colour temperature being wrong when it is not.

The rule that actually solves it

Every bulb in one fixture: same brand, same model number, same purchase. Not the same brand and a similar model. Not the same model bought a year apart — makers revise emitters and phosphors between runs without changing the part number on the box.

Buy spares with the set. One or two extra bulbs from the same order, stored together, turn a failure years from now into a two-minute swap rather than a whole new set. On a six-arm fixture it is the cheapest insurance in the house.

Extend it across the room where you can. A dining room where the chandelier, the sconces and a lamp all run the same bulb model looks composed in a way that is hard to name and easy to feel. Where you cannot match — integrated LED next to a fixture with sockets — keep the mismatched sources out of the same sightline.

  • Nominal CCT is a band; 3000K covers roughly 2850–3150K.
  • Look for a stated MacAdam step. 3-step is tight, 5-step is mainstream, silence means unbinned.
  • Check CRI and R9, not CRI alone.
  • Same brand, model and batch for every socket in one fixture.
  • Buy one or two spares at the same time and store them together.

Can I mix LED brands in the same chandelier?

You can, and it will usually show. Different phosphors and binning place them at different points inside the same nominal number. If you must mix, put the odd bulb in a socket facing away from the room and plan to replace the set.

Is a higher CRI bulb guaranteed to match another high-CRI bulb?

No. CRI describes rendering, binning describes consistency. Two 95 CRI bulbs from different makers can still sit noticeably apart in tint.

One bulb died — do I have to replace all six?

If you kept a spare from the original batch, no. If not, and the model is still sold, try one and look at it at night before buying more. When it does not match, replacing the set is the only clean answer.
