Why Does My LED Chandelier Flicker or Buzz on a Dimmer?

The short answer

Almost always it is a mismatch between the dimmer and the LED driver, not a faulty bulb. An “LED-compatible” dimmer plus a “dimmable” bulb guarantees nothing — what matters is the specific dimmer model paired with the specific fixture.

Three numbers fix most cases: keep the load under 80% of the dimmer’s LED rating, stay above its minimum load (often about 5W), and check the maker’s compatibility list for your exact models.

Flicker and buzz are the most argued-about problem in home lighting. Here is the usual order of causes, and where the fix becomes an electrician’s job.

The dimmer’s wattage is a safety limit, not a quiet limit

A dimmer’s printed maximum says what it can carry without overheating, not where it runs silently. The common rule among electricians is to load a dimmer to no more than 80% of its rating: a 250W dimmer carrying 198W of LEDs sits at 79%, right on the line, and a familiar setup for an audible hum.

LED and incandescent ratings are also different numbers on the same device. A dimmer handling 600W of incandescent may be rated only about 150W for LED. Size from the bigger number and you are already over.

Minimum load is the one nobody checks

Dimmers also have a floor. Some are specified with a minimum load of about 5W; once the circuit drops below it as you dim, the device behaves erratically.

This is why the intuitive fix backfires. Swapping to lower-wattage bulbs to go easier on the dimmer can make flicker worse, because it pushes the load under the floor. The right move is a dimmer with a lower minimum.

Low total wattage does not protect you. A 24-light chandelier with 4.5W candelabra bulbs draws barely 108W and can still hum audibly. Buzzing is about waveform and driver behaviour, not watts.

Compatibility lists are real documents

Major manufacturers publish tables of which devices work with which fixtures and lamps. They exist because plenty of combinations do not work: there are documented cases of a 250W LED dimmer listed as incompatible with a specific downlight, the only fix being a different dimmer series. Look both up before buying either.

Test before you spend

Two checks cost nothing. Put an incandescent bulb in one socket: if the buzz stops, the problem is on the LED side. Then film a lit bulb with your phone’s slow-motion camera — incandescent shows a soft rise and fall, a poor LED hard on-off banding.

Interference is another cause: owners report flicker that appears only when a dimmer elsewhere in the house is on. If the fault comes and goes with other rooms, suspect the circuit.

Stop here if the fix involves wiring. Replacing a dimmer, adding a neutral, splitting a circuit or adjusting a calibration trim is electrical work. Have it done by a licensed electrician, and follow your local electrical code — it takes precedence over anything you read online.
