What Size Light Fixture for a Bedroom, and Should It Hang Over the Bed?

Flush mount ceiling light in a calm bedroom
The short answer

Add the bedroom’s length and width in feet, read that number as inches, then take 2–4 in off: a 12 ft × 12 ft bedroom takes a fixture around 20–22 in wide. Bedrooms read better slightly under-scaled than dining rooms do.

You can hang a fixture over the bed if the bottom clears 7 ft off the floor and the ceiling box is rated for the weight. Under 8 ft ceilings, use a flush or semi-flush mount — and never rely on the ceiling fixture alone.

Bedrooms get the least lighting thought of any room in the house and the most complaints afterwards. Two questions come up repeatedly: how big, and can it go over the bed.

Sizing: the room-sum method, minus a little

Measure in feet, add the two dimensions, read the result as inches, then subtract a few inches. A dining chandelier is the centerpiece of its room and a bedroom fixture is not — there is no table under it defining a zone, and a bedroom is somewhere you lie down and look up.

Room size Room-sum Bedroom target
10 ft × 10 ft 20 in 16–18 in
10 ft × 12 ft 22 in 18–20 in
12 ft × 14 ft 26 in 22–24 in

Should it hang over the bed?

It can. Two things decide it: clearance and weight.

For clearance, keep the lowest point of the fixture at least 7 ft (84 in) above the floor. With a mattress top at 25 in that leaves about 59 in over the bed — enough to sit up and change sheets without ducking. At an 8 ft ceiling it also leaves only 12 in for fixture and drop, which is why flush and semi-flush designs win in standard-height rooms.

8 ft ceiling mattress top 25 in 84 in min 84 in of floor clearance leaves about 59 in over the bed. At an 8 ft ceiling that allows only 12 in of fixture and drop.
Measure to the lowest point of the fixture, then check it against your own mattress height.

For weight, a ceiling box used to support a fixture is generally expected to be rated for at least 50 lb, with anything heavier supported independently of the box. Builder-grade bedroom fixtures weigh around 10 lb; the chandelier replacing one often weighs four or five times that.

Check the box before you hang anything over a bed. Plastic ceiling boxes crack when mounting screws are overtightened, and fixtures do come down. Weigh the fixture, confirm the box rating, and fit a joist-spanning support box if there is any doubt. The requirements are set by your local electrical code and are a licensed electrician’s call.

One ceiling fixture is not a bedroom lighting plan

The most common bedroom complaint is not fixture size. It is that there is exactly one light, in the middle of the ceiling, on one switch — uneven light, with a bare source in the sightline of anyone lying down.

A workable minimum for a small bedroom is a two-bulb flush mount or small chandelier plus at least one dimmable lamp. Better: sconces at the bedhead on their own switch, so nobody crosses the room to turn the light off.

Low ceilings

At 7 ft 4 in no hanging fixture works over a bed. Build the room out of pools of light instead — sconces, cove lighting, a torchiere, and small 3–4 in recessed cans rather than one central source.

Color temperature

Use 2700K on a dimmer. Some people run 2000K at night, but at 2000K you cannot read or tell two shirts apart, so it belongs on a lamp rather than the room’s only fixture. Keep every bulb in the room at one color temperature.

What to take away

  • Room length + width in feet, read as inches, less 2–4 in.
  • Over a bed, keep the lowest point at least 84 in off the floor.
  • Confirm the ceiling box rating before hanging weight.
  • Under 8 ft ceilings, go flush or semi-flush.
  • 2700K on a dimmer, plus a lamp or a pair of sconces.

What size chandelier for a 12x12 bedroom?

Around 20 in. The room-sum method gives 24 in; take a couple of inches off, since a bedroom fixture is not anchoring a table.

Is it bad to hang a light directly over the bed?

No, if it has 84 in of floor clearance, a box rated for the weight, and a shade so you are not facing a bare bulb from the pillow.

What color temperature is best for a bedroom?

2700K, dimmable. 4000K and above reads as clinical in a room you sleep in, and mixed color temperatures in one room show immediately.
