What Is CRI, and What CRI Should a Chandelier Bulb Have?

The short answer

CRI scores how accurately a light source renders color, on a scale topping out at 100, where incandescent is 100. For a chandelier in a dining room or anywhere people gather, aim for 95 CRI. 90 CRI is acceptable only if the R9 (deep red) value is above about 70, and 80 CRI is the bare minimum almost any LED can hit.

If a manufacturer publishes an R9 or TM-30 figure at all, that is usually a sign the bulb is genuinely good.

CRI is the specification that decides whether food, wood and skin look right under your chandelier. It is also the one most retailers do not print anywhere.

What the number actually measures

CRI compares how a light source renders a set of reference colors against a reference source. The figure printed on a box — properly Ra — is the average of only the first eight test samples, all of them muted pastels.

The deep saturated colors are tested separately, and the important one is R9, deep red. It is not included in the Ra average, and it is routinely left unpublished. That is why two bulbs can both claim 90 CRI and look nothing alike.

What to ask for, by tier

The two mistakes

Confusing CRI with color temperature

They are unrelated. Color temperature is warm versus cool; CRI is accurate versus not. A 2700K bulb can be 95 CRI and a 5000K bulb can be 80. Cool light is not more truthful light.

Buying “high CRI” without checking R9

“90+ CRI” on a listing tells you almost nothing on its own. Ask for the R9. A brand that will not give you one either has not measured it or does not like the answer.

Why this matters more in a chandelier than anywhere else. A chandelier is usually over a table, and it is usually the light people are seen under. Food and skin are exactly the subjects that depend on deep reds — the part of the spectrum a low R9 flattens.

Buying bulbs for a multi-arm fixture

A chandelier needs a dozen or twenty identical bulbs, which introduces a problem CRI alone will not solve: binning. Bulbs from different production batches can differ visibly in color even at the same nominal rating. Buy them all at once, from one seller, and keep two spares from the same order.

For candelabra fixtures, the current best case is roughly 2700K, around 450 lumens, at 95 CRI. Frosted rather than clear if the bulbs are visible from a seated position — higher CRI and a lower color temperature both reduce perceived glare.

  • Aim for 95 CRI in rooms where people eat or gather.
  • 90 CRI is fine only with R9 above about 70.
