Scale the fixture to the whole stairwell volume: in a 20 ft space plan on 3 to 4 ft tall, because a 2 ft fixture disappears. Keep the bottom above the top of the handrail, and center it so it reads from both floors.
Solve bulb changes before you buy. At 30 ft even a 20 ft extension ladder falls short. Choose long-life lamps, an open design a pole changer can reach, or a fixture on a lowering winch.
Stairwell lighting has two problems. Scale you solve once. Access you live with for years — and it is the one people discover after the first bulb goes.
Size it to the volume, not the floor plan
For width, add the entry’s length and width in feet and read the number as inches. In a two-story space, though, height matters more. Showroom guidance for a 77 in wide entry is about 26 in across; a 12 in fixture there is roughly 30% of what the space wants.
Vertically, fill the space. In a 20 ft stairwell a tiered or elongated fixture 3–4 ft tall reads as intentional. Adding chain to a small fixture does not — it just puts a small object higher.
Where the bottom should land
The one hard rule: do not let the fixture hang below the top of the stair railing. Below that line it enters the path of anyone on the stairs, and stops reading as a whole object from below.
Now solve the bulbs
This is the part that gets skipped. Burnt-out bulbs over stairs stay burnt out for years, because the honest answer to “how do I reach that” is often “you don’t.”
The numbers are unforgiving. A 20 ft extension ladder does not reach a fixture in a 30 ft foyer. Even at 20 ft the working answers are a rented tall stepladder, a multi-position ladder standing on the treads, or an electrician — about an hour’s work for someone who does it often.
Do not improvise a ladder position on a staircase. Ladders braced across treads, or set on a landing at an angle, are how people fall from height. If a fixture cannot be reached from a properly footed ladder, hire an electrician with the right equipment. Work on the ceiling box, wiring or a lowering mechanism should follow local electrical code and be confirmed by a licensed electrician.

The worst combination at height is an enclosed dome. You have to reach the fixture and dismantle the shade on a ladder. Choose one whose lamps you can reach from below.
What installation costs
Height and access drive the price far more than the fixture does. A high-ceiling swap needing a tall ladder and a downrod commonly quotes $300–$1,200. A very heavy chandelier at 22 ft needing scaffolding and reinforcement is a different job: around $1,500 is considered fair for insured work.
