Plan on a minimum of three light sources per room, and three to six in a living room depending on size. Designers use the three-fixture rule: light at three different heights — table lamp, floor lamp, and a ceiling or wall fixture. A single overhead fixture, however good, leaves a room flat and glary.
The costliest lighting mistake is not buying the wrong chandelier. It is buying only the chandelier.
Why one fixture is never enough
A ceiling fixture puts light in one place, high up and in the middle. Everything below it is lit from a single angle, which produces three predictable problems: hard shadows under faces and furniture, glare when you look toward the source, and dark corners the light never reaches.
Adding a second and third source at other heights fills those gaps. This is not about total brightness — a single very bright fixture makes all three worse. It is about direction.
The three-fixture rule
The simplest working version of layered lighting is about height, not count. Put light at three levels in one room:

Three is the floor, not the target. Living rooms commonly land at three to six, and designer schemes for large rooms go past a dozen once picture lights, shelf lighting and candles are counted.
Ambient, task, accent
The other way to check a room is by job rather than height. Ambient is the general level you navigate by. Task is aimed where you read, cook or work. Accent lands on something specific — art, a bookcase, a textured wall.
Most rooms that feel wrong are missing one of the three entirely. A room with only ambient light feels institutional; one with only task lamps feels like a series of caves. Sconces are the usual fix for the accent layer, because they add light without taking floor space.
If the room has no ceiling light
Plenty of apartments and older houses have no ceiling box, only a switched outlet. The order that works best in practice: an uplight torchiere first, since bouncing light off the ceiling is the closest substitute for ambient light; then an arc lamp to reach over seating; then a plug-in pendant; then table lamps.
Put the ceiling fixture on a dimmer. Layering only works if the layers can be balanced against each other. A fixed-output overhead overpowers every lamp in the room whenever it is on.
The wiring decision you make once
The most-cited renovation regret in lighting is running power to one ceiling point and nothing else. Sconce boxes, switched outlets and a second ceiling location are cheap while walls are open and expensive afterward. If you are renovating, place them even if you buy the fixtures later.
