For an LED chandelier, choose an ELV dimmer — reverse phase, also sold as trailing edge. It dims more smoothly and runs quieter than a TRIAC (forward phase) dimmer, which was designed for incandescent loads.
Most ELV dimmers need a neutral wire in the switch box. Three-way versions exist, but the spec sheet must say "3-way". If the LED load is too small to dim steadily, a minimum-load capacitor fixes it.
"LED dimmer" is not one product category. It is two, they work in opposite directions, and buying the wrong one is the most common cause of a new fixture that buzzes or flickers.
What a dimmer actually does
A phase-control dimmer does not lower voltage smoothly. It switches the AC waveform off for part of every half cycle, so the fixture gets less energy. The only question is which part gets cut.
TRIAC: forward phase, leading edge
A TRIAC dimmer waits, then snaps power on partway through each half cycle. That sharp step is harmless to an incandescent filament — a resistive load too slow to care. TRIAC dimmers are cheap, universal, and probably what is in your wall now.
An LED driver is not resistive. It is an electronic power supply with capacitance at its input, and a sharp voltage step pushes a current spike into it. Audibly that is buzz, from the dimmer or the driver or both. Visibly it is flicker, an uneven dimming curve, or a lamp that cuts out below half brightness.
ELV: reverse phase, trailing edge
An ELV dimmer does the opposite: each half cycle begins normally, then switches off before the end. The turn-on is gentle, the inrush is gone, and the flicker and noise usually go with it. That is why makers of decorative fixtures with integrated LED almost always name ELV as the required type.

Replacing a dimmer is live electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. Whether a neutral exists in your box, and how a multi-location circuit is really wired, can only be established on site. This article is educational and is not installation instruction.
The neutral problem
ELV dimmers nearly always need a neutral in the switch box to power their own electronics. In houses wired before neutrals were routinely run to switch locations, it is not there — and this stops more ELV installs than any compatibility issue. Have your electrician confirm the box contents before you choose a model.
Three-way and multi-location
Dimming a fixture controlled from two switches is normal, and reverse-phase dimmers exist for it. The catch is that single-pole and 3-way are different part numbers in the same range. Read the spec, not the marketing copy: it has to say 3-way or multi-location, and in most systems only one of the pair is the dimmer, the other a companion.
Too little load
Dimmers have a minimum load as well as a maximum. A chandelier of LED candelabra bulbs may draw only a handful of watts — below what the dimmer can sense — giving flicker at low levels or a faint glow when off. The fix is a minimum-load capacitor at the fixture. Check whether your dimmer publishes a minimum load and whether that accessory exists.
Five questions for the seller
- Is it dimmable, and with which type — ELV/trailing edge or TRIAC/forward?
- Is there a published list of tested dimmer models?
- Integrated LED or replaceable bulbs? Integrated means the driver decides.
- Total connected load in watts, to check against both dimmer limits?
- Do I need a 3-way or multi-location version?

Will a TRIAC dimmer damage my LED chandelier?
Usually not destroy it, but it can shorten driver life and will often buzz or flicker. Some drivers are specified as TRIAC-compatible; if yours is, forward phase is fine. Check the documentation rather than assuming either way.
Can I dim a fixture that is not listed as dimmable?
No. A non-dimmable driver on a dimmer flickers, hums or fails, and is not covered by warranty. Dimmability is a property of the driver, not the fixture body.
